AI chatbot vs live chat: which belongs on your site?

Live chat converts but does not scale. AI chatbots scale but frustrate when badly built. How to decide which fits your business — and how to combine them.

Most B2B sites end up with one of two things in the bottom-right corner: a live chat widget staffed by a human, or an AI assistant. They solve different problems, and picking the wrong one costs you either money or leads.

Where live chat wins

Live chat still converts best on high-value, low-volume enquiries. If your average deal is worth five figures and you get twenty enquiries a week, a real person answering in ninety seconds beats any model.

The catch is coverage. Live chat that goes unanswered outside business hours is worse than no chat at all — visitors read the silence as neglect.

Where an AI assistant wins

An AI assistant earns its place when questions are repetitive and volume is high: pricing ranges, timelines, service scope, "do you work with companies in my country". It answers instantly, at 3am, in whatever language the visitor typed.

The failure mode is a bot that hallucinates or answers off-topic questions. The fix is scope discipline, not a bigger model:

  • Ground it in your actual content, not general knowledge.
  • Give it a hard scope boundary, and a graceful decline outside it.
  • Always leave a visible route to a human.

The combination that actually works

The setup we build most often is a tiered one:

  1. The AI assistant handles the first message and answers common questions.
  2. Anything it cannot resolve captures an email and hands off.
  3. High-intent signals — pricing, timelines, "can we talk" — route straight to the team.

That gives you instant response coverage without letting a model negotiate your contracts.

What to measure

Track two numbers (there are four worth watching): containment rate (share of conversations resolved without a human) and qualified conversations started. A bot with high containment and no conversations is deflecting, not helping. You want both moving up.

If you want to see what this looks like on your own site, the assistant in the corner of this page is the same pattern — ask it something.
